While traveling by plane,
be sure your children drink
plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. If any of your children are subject
to motion sickness, ask their doctor to prescribe medication to help.
If you have a child still
young enough to need a car seat, bring it with you when you travel. Have
them sit in their car seat on the plane, since seating young children on
your lap during a plane ride may be dangerous. You could lose your grip
on your child during a sudden descent. In the event of severe turbulence,
if you are seated with a safety belt strapped across both of you, the force
of your body straining against the belt might crush your child. Do not
allow your children to wander around the cabin unattended. Bring lots of
toys so that they stay involved in safe activities. Never let a child go
to the rest room alone.
The child safety seats available
from car rental agencies are often in poor condition, and you may not know
how to install one properly or how to get your child in and out easily.
It's always best to take one from home with you.
Never allow your children
to swim unattended, and make sure there is always a lifeguard on duty.
When walking in busy markets or down crowded streets, keep a firm grip
on your children. If you have more than two children and are a single parent,
form a chain so that everyone is holding hands. Be sure to carry a backpack
so that both your hands are free. Never leave your children alone. If you
are at a resort and want to leave your children with a sitter, be sure
to investigate the service and make sure it's reputable. Practice the same
safety precautions you use at home, only more vigilantly.
