Airport Driving:
Be especially careful when driving
around an airport; this can be the most dangerous part of your trip. Everyone
is flustered, late and unfamiliar with their surroundings. A driver may
suddenly dart across three lanes without any warning. Be sure to give yourself
plenty of time to make your flight, so you aren't tempted to drive unsafely.
Airport Parking:
Park in a well-lit area
close to the entrance, elevator or shuttle stop. If you see someone suspicious
hovering in the shadows, don't get out of your car; keep the doors locked,
and drive some place else. Bring the packing stub with you on your trip.
This will make it harder for car thieves to steal your car while you're
away. Write down the location of your car on the ticket, so you won't be
stuck wandering around the parking lot. (Thieves are often attracted to
people who seem lost or confused.) If you arrive back to the airport late
at night and are anxious about getting to your car safely, you can request
a security escort at most major airports.
Once you get on the plane,
relax. This is the safest part of your trip, but don't leave your valuables
unattended. (If you have a fear of flying, check out our tutorial on how
to control
your fear.)
