Let's be honest
for a second. Most people
are on some level afraid to fly. Even the most seasoned traveler feels
deep down that there is something unnatural about a flying object made
out of several tons of steel, aluminum and salted peanuts.
The
fear of flying is called aerophobia. It afflicts over 25 million Americans.
Surveys have shown that approximately 64% of females and 36% of males disclose
that they have some level of fear.
Some
famous aerophobes include actors Whoopi Goldberg, Arsenio Hall, Bob Newhart,
Maureen Stapleton, Glenda Jackson, Cher, actor/playwright Sam Shepard,
producer Aaron Spelling, and singer Aretha Franklin. To avoid flying, sportscaster
and former NFL coach Jon Madden travels around the country in a custom
built bus called "The Madden Cruiser." Not to be outdone, Whoopi has a
customized bus too. If it has a special name, Whoopi's not telling.
Unfortunately
most of us don't have a celebrity's salary. We have to overcome our fears.
Whether you just pay strict attention to the takeoffs and landings or grip
the arm rests until your veins bulge, we've got the tips to help your spirit
soar.
