| If you can't secure all
employees with
"golden handcuffs" in the form of stock options or even matched 401K plans,
come up with creative solutions to show your gratitude for a job well done.
Start by considering the
product or service your business offers. Can you trade it with another
company? For example, say you own a small widget company in the Kalahari
Desert. It just so happens that the ice cream store next door needs a steady
supply of widgets to keep their freezers running smoothly. Can you supply
them with widgets in exchange for a gallon of mint chip every Tuesday for
your hot, sugar-addicted employees? You get the idea.
What about free tickets to
events? Many local theaters and comedy clubs are desperate for warm bodies
to fill the seats. See if you can get discounted group rates. Do you have
any friends who can scam you cheap or free tickets to concerts or sporting
events? Such perks are always appreciated. Do you do a lot of business
with a local social/retail/country club? They may provide you with discounted
membership opportunities.
Can you afford to swing lunch
for everyone on Fridays? This has the double benefit of not only keeping
people happy, but keeping them on site, too. (Especially since many people
extend their Friday lunch hour to an hour and a half or more.) A periodic
bagel run is always appreciated - especially on Monday mornings. This is
an inexpensive way to boost morale and keep people productive.
Work in a big city? Public
transportation passes will be greatly appreciated by your staff. Got a
lot of frequent flier miles racked up? Consider giving free plane tickets
to employees as bonuses.
