Even if your office is located
in an industrial wasteland twenty
miles from the nearest 7-Eleven, it doesn't mean that entering the building's
interior should be as mind-numbing an experience as gazing at its surroundings.
In fact, it should be just the opposite. Relaxed, friendly environments
facilitate creativity and contribute to your employees' overall sense of
contentment.
Feeling At-Home in the
Office
Make sure that the office
is pleasant to spend time in. You expect your employees to spend the better
part of the day there, so it is in your best interest to make them feel
as comfortable as possible. The Nickelodeon studio in Burbank, California
has its own miniature golf course where employees are free to putt a few
holes to help blow away the cobwebs. This may not be the best solution
for you, but at the very least, make sure your office is well lit and organized.
Here are some other suggestions
for making the workplace more habitable:
-
If it is acceptable in your
industry, encourage folks to decorate their offices or cubicles to their
taste.
-
Encourage employees to get up,
walk around, and stretch periodically. No one benefits from being tied
to a computer eight hours a day. For added fun, if you have an intercom
system, remind employees to take their daily constitutional. (But remember
that too many of these announcements will annoy your staff, and lower morale.)
-
Make sure your office has a
space where employees can sit and chat, sip a soda, or read a newspaper.
-
Keep updated on what's going
on in people's lives. Cutting someone slack during a time of personal crisis
will be appreciated. If treated with understanding, they will probably
be the first to offer to stay late on a Friday to help finish a project.
-
Institute "Fido Fridays" and
allow pet owners to bring their best friends to work one Friday a month.
Consider a Summer Fridays program, encouraging people to leave early on
Fridays during the summer.
Finally, the best way to find
out what will make your employees happier in their surroundings is to ask
them to make suggestions. Some of their requests will be impossible to
fulfill, but you may be surprised by how little it takes to lift the spirits
of your staff.
